Cornwall Environmental Consultants was commissioned by the Mid-Cornwall Moors LIFE Project to carry our surveys for the marsh fritillary butterfly (Euphydryas aurinia) on nine sites within the Mid-Cornwall moors. The Mid-Cornwall Moors LIFE Project is a partnership project that aims to improve key habitats in central Cornwall. The key focus for this work is the marsh fritillary butterfly. The partnership involves the following organisations: Natural England, Butterfly Conservation, Cornwall Wildlife Trust, the Environment Agency and the Highways Agency; and is supported by the EU LIFE Nature Programme.
The aim of the marsh fritillary surveys was to provide data for population monitoring and site management purposes. The surveys included collection of flight period and larval web monitoring data in accordance with methodologies provided by Butterfly Conservation. Information on habitat quality and recommendations for habitat management for marsh fritillary were also given.
