A30 Reptile Trapping and Relocation including watching brief for reptiles, dormice and nesting birds

April to October 2005

Client

Scott Wilson Kirkpatrick & Co. Ltd., on behalf of Alfred McAlpine Capital Projects Ltd and the Highways Agency.

Services

Reptile translocation and watching brief for vegetation clearance in areas supporting reptiles, dormice and nesting birds.

Alfred McAlpine Capital Projects Ltd. are constructing 11km of dual carriageway across Goss Moor in Mid-Cornwall on behalf of The Highways Agency. The route crosses habitats used by reptiles and dormice.

Cornwall Environmental Consultants facilitated the implementation of the ecological mitigation plan for this scheme. Advance ecological works were undertaken during the summer of 2005 to ensure that the site was clear for construction to commence in the autumn.

Cornwall Environmental Consultants undertook reptile translocation work including: an ecological watching brief on installation of temporary reptile fencing, selection of suitable release sites, trapping of reptiles using artificial refugia and analysis of results to monitor translocation progress.

We also carried out an ecological watching brief for vegetation clearance in areas supporting dormice and nesting birds. Dormice were translocated, under DEFRA licence, to suitable habitat not affected by the works. Works were avoided around active birds' nests until the young had fledged.
